Reading the Signs of Depression

As all of us face the stress and pressures of daily living, some of us are able to cope better while some fall into the deadly pits of depression. Depression is a disorder of the mind that grows

beyond the ordinary feelings of sadness and regret, it is an all encompassing emotion of agonizing pain and extreme grief that overpowers an individual and changes the way they view the world and their life in general. It is a disorder that affects a staggering 20 million individuals in the US alone.


Many believe that the figures on depression will inevitably increase over the years. An understanding on why and how this disorder is manifested can help us curtail the growing number of its victims. The battle with depression has been long and arduous as many of those suffering from this disease fail to identify and accept that they are under depression, and this could lead to a far more alarming scenario which could result in death. As depression attacks the mind, its manifestations can run the gamut of physical, mental and behavioral changes. 
Pleasure – depression brings about a significant fall in one’s sense of pleasure and happiness. This is usually manifested by a sudden disinterest in activities and tasks that they previously find pleasurable.

Changes in appetite and sleeping behaviors – This disorder also affects the most common bodily functions such as eating and sleeping, which can result in excessive weight gain or alarming weight loss.

Temperament – a person who is depressed undergoes a continuous mood shifts that can spike up one’s temper. In addition, the individual also displays varying emotions of loneliness, isolation, self-loathing and can lead to a disturbingly violent behavior towards others and one’s self.

Physical strains – another visible sign of depression is an apparent loss of an individual’s energy and zest for life, under this conditions, one inevitably feels a nagging feeling of tiredness and strain.

Mental imbalance – as this disorder attacks the mental capacities of a person, he becomes

less focused and is unable to make rational decision in everyday life.

An understanding of these telltale depression signs can mean help for you and your loved ones plagued with depression.
